Westminster Matters
Rt Hon David Maclean MP was elected to represent Penrith and the Border in 1983. Mr Maclean is a member of the Privy Council. In a distinguished parliamentary career he has held office as Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Minister of State, Department of the Environment, Minister of State, Home Office and opposition Chief Whip.
Mr Maclean campaigns continuously on behalf of his constituents. Current campaigns include:
- Opposing Government plans to reduce jobs and the level of service to taxpayers at the Penrith local office of HM Revenue and Customs.
- Backing local farmers ‘efforts to obtain long overdue payments under the Single Farm Payments Scheme. Many payments from 2005 have not been made.
- Condemning the lack of Government investment in rural areas and the run down of local services
- Insisting that all EU states follow the directives on animal welfare and opposing the import of cheap food produced by suppliers who blatantly ignore the required standards. This puts Eden food producers at a disadvantage and threatens local jobs.
You can discuss these matters and any other issues at local surgeries which are held regularly throughout the area. Dates are given on the Home Page. If your concern is urgent, please write to Mr Maclean at
