Eden Conservatives launched their election campaign at a meeting in Penrith. Prospective candidates and supporters were present to hear details of the plan for Eden from Councillor Gordon Nicolson and National and European Conservative priorities for local government from local Member of Parliament David Maclean and Member of the European Parliament Sir Robert Atkins.
Gordon Nicolson told the meeting that Conservatives had made a difference on Eden District Council. He added that key policy areas were Council Tax, Housing and Planning policies, sustaining Eden’s villages and supporting small businesses. Candidates are committed to the Group ten point plan for Eden.
David Maclean said that the coming election would be see more seats contested than ever before. He said that the Conservative national policy was to get off the backs of local government and allow Council more freedom to develop local solutions for local problems. Council running costs could be reduced if less staff time was spent coping with inspections and pursuing targets, many of which provided little value for Taxpayers.
Sir Robert Atkins gave an insight into the work of a Member of the European Parliament with particular emphasis on limiting the burden of regulation on small businesses.
